A Whisper in the Mountains
Welcome to Sussurro in Montagna, a restored 300-year-old Tuscan farmhouse nestled in the hills above Cortona.
Thoughtfully reimagined by local craftsmen and a Florence-trained architect, the home blends old-world character with modern comfort, offering four bedrooms, a heated pool, graceful arches, and authentic access to Tuscany and nearby Umbria.
Sussurro means whisper, and from the beginning we felt the house quietly telling us what it wanted to become.
This secluded stone villa features four inviting bedrooms, three modern bathrooms, and a beautifully appointed chef’s kitchen, ideal for gathering over a shared meal, a bottle of wine, or the stories that only emerge when time finally slows down. With air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and thoughtful touches throughout, the home balances rustic charm with modern ease.
Step outside and you’ll find yourself immersed in the unspoiled beauty of the Apennine foothills - a setting as dramatic as it is serene. Whether you’re traveling with family, a group of friends, or a loved one seeking solitude, Sussurro in Montagna welcomes you with open arms, open skies, and a rhythm all its own.
One of the quiet luxuries of Sussurro in Montagna is its rare position high above the valley, where cool breezes move gently through the olive trees and cypress groves. While the plains below grow heavy with summer heat, our elevated micro-climate stays remarkably temperate, offering natural shelter from both sun and wind.
Guests often remark on the comforting contrast: warm afternoons by the pool, followed by crisp, restful evenings. And when the weather does surprise, our temperature-controlled pool is ready, heated on cool days and evenings, and cooled when the sun lingers a little too long.
Here, in the quiet of the mountains, summer reveals its softer side - and time takes on the kind of stillness you’ll carry home with you.
While Sussurro in Montagna offers seclusion and stillness, it also places you in the heart of central Italy’s most storied landscapes. From this peaceful perch in the Apennines, you’re perfectly positioned to explore both Tuscany and Umbria, with the region’s most iconic hill towns and cultural treasures just a scenic drive away.
Spend the day wandering the Renaissance streets of Florence or Siena, sip Brunello in Montalcino, explore the wine cellars of Montepulciano, or admire the harmony of Pienza and the golden fields of the Val d’Orcia. Cross into Umbria to visit the spiritual heights of Assisi, the art and energy of Perugia, or the lush hidden beauty of the Val di Chiana.
Closer still, the medieval charm of Cortona offers cafés, artisan shops, and local history just minutes away. Whether you’re drawn to art, wine, food, or slow discovery, this location places you at the crossroads of it all, with the added luxury of returning each evening to your whispering mountain retreat.
The journey to Sussurro in Montagna is part of the experience itself.
Leaving the timeless hill town of Cortona behind, the road gradually winds upward through the Apennine foothills, revealing sweeping views of valleys, distant villas, forests, and on clear days, even Lake Trasimeno shimmering in the distance. Along the way, you may spot chestnut groves, wildflowers, stone terraces, and occasionally local wildlife, perhaps a fox crossing the road at dusk or a wild boar disappearing quietly into the trees.
Eventually, the route transitions onto a traditional strada bianca, or Tuscan white road, which leads deeper into the hills toward the property. This final kilometer is a charming and very typical feature of the countryside here, well maintained and accessible by normal passenger vehicle. Along the way, you’ll pass a handful of beautiful homes and Tenuta La Scure, a local countryside restaurant known for its rustic atmosphere and authentic Tuscan cuisine.
While the roads are narrower and more rural than many guests may be accustomed to, they are safe and very much part of the authentic Tuscan countryside experience. This is still the Tuscany of another era, the land once traveled by Etruscans, Romans, artists, poets, pilgrims, philosophers, and aristocrats seeking beauty, solitude, and inspiration among the hills. The landscape itself has inspired generations for centuries.
For the most enjoyable arrival experience, we recommend:
• Arriving during daylight hours for your first visit
• Choosing a compact or midsize vehicle rather than an oversized SUV or van whenever possible
• Taking your time and enjoying the scenery along the way
Guests traveling with larger vehicles, including Sprinter-style vans, should have no difficulty accessing the property with normal care and attention, as the roads are regularly used by local residents and service vehicles.
Detailed driving instructions will be provided prior to arrival to help ensure a smooth and relaxed check-in experience. Should you prefer a private driver or need assistance with directions, we’re always happy to help.
Part of what makes Sussurro so special is its quietness and sense of retreat. By the time you arrive, the pace of everyday life tends to fade away, replaced by the stillness, beauty, and slower rhythm of the Tuscan hills.
For many guests, the drive itself becomes one of the most memorable parts of arriving at Sussurro.
